I'm sitting here craving french toast. But I'm also feeling a bit adventurous on the recipe.. I know that when I make it I use:

Healthynut Walnut bread OR Apple Cinnamon bread for Sam's club
The original eggs/milk/cinnamon..
and then I throw in some vanilla extract or almond extract depending what we have around.

What do you put in your french toast batter to... lets say... "kick it up a notch"? :p

I take the frenchie, throw him in some eggs, then dump him in a pan.

After he surrenders, of course ;)

No, seriously though, I usually use whipped eggs and 7 grain bread, with cinnamon and powdered sugar on it.

I think the key to good French toast is not what you dip your bread into but what bread you dip. You need a really good whole loaf of bread. Not that crap you buy precut at the grocery store. Get a good loaf and make your own 1/2" thick cuts. And let that sit out overnight (or around 8 hours). Good French toast is made from slightly stale bread. I just keep my dip simple...egg, milk and cinnamon. Brown on both sides over high heat and then finish off in the oven at 350. Nice crispy outside and soft inside. Top with powdered sugar and your favorite syrup.

Eggs, milk, sugar, orange juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, vanilla, and French bread sliced about an inch thick. If I'm not in a hurry, I'll do it the night before so the mixture soaks into the bread. Put some butter on a baking sheet and preheat the oven to 400 and bake for 20-25 minutes. If I feel like being fancy, I'll sprinkle some chopped pecans or walnuts on top of the toast before baking, then top it with some confectioners sugar and sliced oranges.

take 3-4 eggs, add some water, whip it up

Open 33 cent loaf of white bread, take a slice and dip into egg mixture until it coats both sides.

Toss into frying pan that has had non stick spray applied to it.

Turn once after approx 60 seconds

remove from pan and place on plate

Apply syrup liberally

Repeat as necessary..

Enjoy.

Thats all there is to it. Tastes great, easy to make. No need to complicate things by trying different kinds of bread, different things in your egg mixture, etc.

It's always fun to try new stuff though... and you never know what the hell it's like until you try it. The almond extract makes french toast damn good

I've never heard of a French toast recipe that doesn't call for using stale bread. It allows for better absorption of the dip without the bread falling apart.

Wiki's French Bread

French Toast from Good Eats

Edit for historical background: Legend has it that French toast evolved from when food was dear and every bit had to be used - even stale bread. Ancient cooks discovered that by dipping stale bread into a mixture of eggs and milk helped rejuvenate it.

If i want extra good french toast this is what i do:
Use Challah bread, cut it into medium thick slices... leave it out in the open while preparing filling.

Mix together room temp. cream cheese, vanilla extract, a bit of milk ultra fine sugar and some rum soaked raisins (or fruit of your choice) together with cinnamon and nutmeg. combind until smooth.

Make normal coating for french toast with eggs, a splash of whole milk or cream almond extract and more cinnamon and a pinch of sugar. put filling between two peices of bread and them dip bread in coating for 10 seconds on each side.

Then, grill in pan on LOW HEAT until both sides are golden brown! sprinkle with powered sugar or with syrup!

Damn that sounds amazing. You stick the 2 pieces of bread together with the filling... THEN cook them like a sandwich? Wouldn't the inside of the sandwich still be raw-ish?
Edit: And also... how much cream cheese, etc? for the filling.

The secret to this recipe is to cook the "sandwich" on LOW heat for a while. Don't rush it... that way, the middle gets warmed up and kind of gooey and good!
I use a package of cream cheese for about 8 servings... but you could use more or less to taste. Also, don't over-fill it because it will ooze out of the sides and create a mess.

Also, an alternate idea to the egg wash on the bread, use cool whip/whipped cream in place of the milk!

Eggs, bit of milk, some cinnamon.

I actually like to use this bread called Italian Boulle from La Brea Bakery.

The difference between bad french toast and good french toast is vanilla. French toast without vanilla sucks. If you've been making your french toast without vanilla, try adding some. It makes a world of difference.

We found a recipe similar to Lola's in the clearance section of target. Except instead of raisins, we used strawberry jam. Coat one side of first piece of bread in jam, one side of other piece in cream cheese. Then dip in the egg mixture. Then coat the whole thing in crushed cereal, The recipe called for muselix or something, but we used crushed special k or corn flakes and it still tasted great.

Replace water with milk for better results.
Other improvements include
Switch out the 33cent bread for Texas Toast
Add powdered sugar and cinnamon to the finished product, or even while cooking.
Top with blueberries (my wife prefers strawberries).

I'm also wondering that.

Drier bread sucks up more dip? I make french toast only when the bread is stale :)
