Shooting it or hitting it in right spot with something hard would not cause it pain if done right, but... I don't think you're willing to shoot your own dog, I know I would not. It just does not seem right to directly induce the death vs having someone else professionally do it, even though the dog wont know/feel anything. So think best get is to just do it through the vet. Best bet is have them also dispose/cremate the body so you bring the dog to the vet alive, and never see it again so at least you don't get to see it while it's dead.

If you do go through with this, I would also get another dog asap. You can't "replace" a pet, but at least you will have a new companion right away. Maybe get a puppy so you get to watch him grow and get attached.

When we lost our cat we looked for her for a few months. When we realized it was hopeless we got the same bread of cat. She shall never be replaced but at least we filled the void. Nothing worse then looking at that empty spot where the food bowl used to be, or going to bed knowing for sure, he/she wont come to bed with you.

Note - if he can't afford to put down his current dog, he can't afford to go out and get a new one either.

It only cost me $16.00 to have my cat put down. I feel your pain, but if you love the animal PAY THE MONEY.

I'm calling the HS society tomorrow, just my luck its 30 miles south.

Figure out exactly how much its gonna cost and bite the bullet, theres nothing i can do, i also will have to get her cremated since there's no way i would be able to deal with that.

Thankfully she has a brother and while he might be lonely,at least i still have him.

Talk to a vet and get their opinion. They know animals and what they are going through better than anyone else.

That's good think that's the best thing to do. Also ask the vet if there is any way to get the dog to feel better but it sounds like there is not at this point. Age has caught up with him and he's had a good life at least.
