how do you make manual resource settings stick in XP HOME?

Installed a 3com 56k modem on an ACER laptop. XP picked it up but it is conflicting with another device. I went into device manager and change the settings. I connected to AOL just fine, but once I reboot, the settings go back to what they were. How do I get them to stick?

What's it "conflicting" with?

I/O range 03F8-03FF is being used by COM1

I change the IRQ to 05 and it works, but it doesn't stay once rebooted
