How do you make friends/meet people when moving to a new city/town?

Right now I'm in college and it's easy to make friends and meet new people. However, I'm worried that I might end up getting in a job in a city/town where I won't know anyone. How would I go about meeting people and making new friends? In college its easy since there are tons of different student organizations, you meet people in class, you make friends with people you live with/by, parties, etc. but what about in the real world where you can't really do these things if you don't know anyone?

When I moved to Seattle I didn't know anyone. But I found some gaming groups via Craigslist and Meetup.com and, through the people I met there, made some really awesome friends. I also met a few great guys just hanging out at the local game shop (really more of a cybercafe with board games and consoles).

Study your neighbors. Find out when the Husband's go to work, find out which wives have workoholic husbands, who is deprived of attention, then make your kills, big eagle. :)

Sports leagues have always been my thing ... basketball, soccer, golf ... the drinking afterwards usually cements new friendships.

It's pretty easy but you have to be willing to put yourself out there a bit. Join a volunteer org in your new town. Many cities have adult sports leagues that you can sign up as a single and get on a team. If you hit it off with someone (guy or girl) don't just let it pass since you have very few chances when you are in a new town. Ask them to go grab a drink or coffee and let them know you're new around there. You can't be timid and expect people to search out you because they don't know you're there! I've done this twice in the past 7 years so I know how scary it can feel.

craigslist, church, sports, volunteering, networking with friends you already have to find out who they know in the area

I had/have similar problems.. I moved with my wife 7 states away and we have not had luck even being exposed to people our own age. Usually you meet people at work, cept I work at home and my wife is a teacher in a school with mostly elderly. Having a kid is another route. Meet people that way. We have tried meetup.com with limited success.
