how do i go about geting other sites to link?
my site does have a monthly contest which has drawn some people but for the most part other places are very protective over the members and dont want them to visit anywhere else.
how do i get listed in directories.
for instance what would be an affiliate program?
you sound like your very good at this.
Search engine optimization means to set up your site and tweak it so that search engines rank it closer to the top. It's very complex (and expensive) to get a site ranked Number One on Google - but there are things you can do for free that are useful. Go to Google and look up SEO - search engine optimization - and whatever you do, don't spend any money on programs or anything until you know what you're doing.
One of the main things to up your rank on search engines is to get lots of links. Getting another site to link to yours is fairly easy - you just email the site owner, tell them you like their site and you think your site & theirs would be good if they were linked. Having a lot of quality links is a good way to get up in the search engine rankings, so it's easy to find sites to link with. You'll get rejections, but keep trying, it's worth it.
Directories - go to google and look up web directories in your subject. You'll probably find some. Then just email them for info, and then submit. You won't get a lot of hits from that, but every little bit helps. Once again, don't spend money for a listing - until you know more about directories, and you know for sure that you will get enough traffic from them to justify the money spent. You might get lucky and find a perfect fit.
You will have to wade through a lot of junk to get to the good stuff - but if you keep at it, you'll hook up with some useful things.
affiliate programs: if you sell something (say, Chocolate) you need customers. If somebody else has a web site with chocolate recipes, then they probably have visitors that are pre-disposed to buy chocolate. So, the company that sells chocolates sets up an affiliate program whereby the chocolate recipe site sends people to the chocolate sales site, and gets a percentage of the sales from those referrals. If the chocolate sales company has lots of affiliates, they get lots of customers. And the affiliates get lots of money. Good for all.
Now, if you want visitors, but you aren't selling anything, you can still set up an affiliate program. To continue the chocolate subject line, if you have a chocolate recipe site, you can put together a chocolate recipe book, and give it away free. Other chocolate-subject sites can give away your chocolate recipe book as a FREE BONUS. You just make sure that your book has your URL on it somewhere, and you get that site - and anybody else who gives away your recipe book - publicising your site. Once again, good for all.
Read up a bit on the basics of affiliate marketing, it's a useful publicity tool.
Congrats on your contest, way to go. If you want to get another site to mention it, you can offer to mention their contest on your site, or work out a deal. Nobody said this was easy! It takes some time and considerable rejection in the beginning to get this to happen. Also, there are a lot of contest directories (go to google to find some) and contest info sites that you can list your contest on, free. You'll get responses - you'll learn how to find somewhere that sends you Useful visitors - takes time, but it's once again worth it.
Yes, I do this for a living. Keep asking questions.
Also, there are a lot of forums out there for web marketing - if you have some spare time, check them out. Lots of idiots out there, but also a lot of really nice people. As you might guess, google "web marketing forum" and have fun.
