there are these stray cats and kittens that always run away from any human who approaches them... there are a bunch of stray cats in my area that come out at night... i always see some in my garbage bin.

The same way Scorpion does in Mortal Kombat. "GET OVER HERE!"

Honestly I don't know. It's very hard. Get down low and be gentle with voice and twiddle fingers and stuff.

They could be feral, just fair warning.

Feral cats are domestic cats that "turn wild" they can be dangerous because if they are sick or otherwise threatened, they are not afraid of humans.

And i dont know about you but im not in the mood for 9 shots today from possible rabies :p

Food + crouching down low and talking gently. Though nothing is likely to work if they're feral. They're just too wild to be handled safely.

A good first step is putting down the dinner knife.

You just give them food for a few days or weeks, depending on their age usually. Gradually approaching closer on each time. Eventually they will let you pet them.

from your local shelter or animal association you can get a trap. They are harmless to the animal. They might require a fully refundable deposit (approx $50.00).

I got two of mine by coaxing. One just walked up and sat at my back door. My daughter fed her, and closed the door.. Six hours later she was still there and when we opened the door and asked her is she wanted to come in, she walked right in and has owned the place ever since.

the other was a lot more difficult. She has been badly abused and was in a great deal of pain. It took me every night over six weeks of putting food down, walking away and getting closer by one step every day. She was in sad shape. Broken ribs, cigarette burns, flu, a virus and 2inches of her tail cut off. She cost me a fortune, but is worth every penny.

Just be careful. You have no idea what disease these kitties are harbouring. And if you choose to do it by hand, wear gloves and expect them to get wild.

Good Luck!! :)

foreign cats usually warm up to me fairly quickly.
i guess i have a repoire with them or something or they can tell im a cat person.
it does take some gentle coaxing and slow movements, nothing sudden to frighten them.

Food, then play:

A peacock feather. You can buy one without the "eye" on the end or with a small eye for about 50 cents at import and decorating stores. Wiggle it in the dirt and most kitties will come right over to investigate. Leave it quiet until kitty sniffs it, then pull it slowly towards you. Kitty will pounce. Let the games begin.

yeah, that's how i got my kitty. he was a little kitten back then. he's still shy and scared of fast movements, but he's a member of the family and plays with the dog and stuff.
