How do you look for a new job without your current employer finding out?

Well, lately I've been running out of ideas for taking mornings/afternoon offs or taking whole sick days because I have to fly some where for an interview. Also, I get along great with my boss and I just can't stand lying to his face.

So, how do you guys do it?

Can always ask to setup a phone interview instead of an in person one. I've never interviewed somewhere I had to fly to. Just places I could drive to and I'd just bail from work a bit early or see if they could schedule it a bit later in the fay.

Well, yes the phone interviews are not so much of a problem. The interviews that want to meet in Chicago, Foxborough, or RTP are the problem. I'm really looking all over the country not just my home town, so it makes it a little more difficult.

The tricky bit I find is references in the CV.., I mean you'd want your boss/colleage to be one of them to give you a refence of how you work, but of course, it'd dodgy asking them, depending on the relationship you have with them.

Phone interviews are not so good. It's a lot easier to give a good impression when you're actually sat there with them.

Just keep on lying to him. OR you could just tell him your looking elsewhere and you then don't have any hassles at your current job about references or lying to him. BUT you will definately have to leave sometime as your chances of advances have probably tanked to no where.

Good luck.

Put in some vacation requests at regular intervals, like take off every monday for a month, then you can schedule interviews on those days.

Just curious what kind of jobs are you applying for where you need to fly to a different city?

Funny story.

I was interviewing with a company in Boston - was living in Virginia. Took the day off, flew to Boston, interviewed, went back to Logan Airport and was waiting for my flight.

They announced the arrival of the plane we would be using to fly back to Dulles. Got in line since I was first class and out from the arriving plane walks my boss.

There I was in a suit and tie (having asked for the day off) in Boston having just finished an interview. It was so obvious what I was doing. We never spoke of it or even mentioned it again.
