How do you know if vendor sells you a pretested CPU?

I just ordered my CPU from www.icompz.com
and it didnt come in a box or anything but just in
the plastic case that it is in.
the chip looks brand new. I havent used the cpu yet
because my mobo isnt here yet.

It sounds like you got an OEM. I do not like buying an OEM processor with the hope of it being an outstanding overclocker. I believe if you buy OEM CPU's from some vendors you stand a good chance of getting a CPU that may have already been pretested and doesn't overclock well. This is just my personal opinion.

The answer to you question is: You don't know.

if it's a piii cpu, you can check the chip id and match it on the intel website database to find it's authenticy.

There is no way to know for sure, unless they visibly left thermal compound on it or marked it in some way. One thing for sure; don't buy a cpu from a vendor that sells overclocked cpus, hoping to get an untested one.

well it seems like the chip is brand new.
no marking on the chip itself.
i bought it from icompz.com
dunno if anyone is familiar with them.
