How do you know if the toner level of a cartridge is too low?

I mean, is there a way I can just look at the cartridge and say, this is getting low, I'll probably need to replace it soon

unless you have an el cheapo pos laser printer, there should be an indicater either in software, or better yet, in hardware that will say "toner low"

When it's low sometimes you can shake the toner and print a few more pages.
