I have a 94 nissan altima. I just put in a new alternator. There is no automatic tensioner rather you can adjust the tension right there at the alternator by turning the tension bolt to the right. What's the proper procedure???

You should find the specs in the service manual, you basically push the belt down with your finger and see how much it sinks. On my previous car the spec was around 10-15mm.
If its too lose you'll notice it will squeel, so tighten it up until it stops squeeling.

I think the general rule of thumb for a V-belt is no more than 1/4" and no less than 1/8"?
