How do you keep yourself awake?

I go to the gym in the morning before work and usually by about lunchtime, I feel physically and mentally sluggish. I've backed away from caffeine for certain reasons and was wondering if there are any other things you know of that can help me stay awake. Unfortunately, not exercising in the morning and caffeine pills like No-Doz are not an option for me. And yes, I am getting plenty of sleep (~8 hours/day). I am thinking it may be caused by a deficiency in vitamins/minerals. Anybody have this problem? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem; I'm always tired. However, I do not get enough sleep (two jobs, kid, life) Do not eat right (two jobs, kid, life) and don't exercise much (two jobs, kid, life).

I frequently find my head banging off my keyboard/monitor at work and I have no short term memory whatsoever.

I drink lots of coffee, take a multivitamin w/lunch everday and walk up and down the hall when feeling extremely sleepy. I also...*thud* Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Not being sarcastic... To stay awake get more sleep. If you can, a 30 minute power nap can work wonders

~8 hours/day isn't necessarily enough sleep. Some people only need 6 hours, others need 10. What is your diet? Do you eat breakfast or are you working out & starving yourself until lunchtime?

I also found that I had no problem staying awake when I was studying in college, but even though I'm only a year out of it, I find myself sleepy all the time.

I'm thinking it probably does have to do somewhat with my diet. I've lost 20lbs since moving out to NY, and I think my body is shutting down due to the lack of nutrition or something. I (usually) eat 3 meals a day, but I think I've cut down significantly on the amount that I've eaten. You think taking a multivitamin pill daily will help?

It depends on the types of foods you eat. Veggies (especially green) will keep energy levels up, starches (potatoes, sugars, pasta, etc..) will burn up quickly and leave your body wanting more.

It could be your blood sugar. Maybe try smaller, more frequent meals to help keep your blood sugar a bit more even.

Keep yourself hydrated, that used to be a problem for me. Maybe ease up a little on the workout, save some energy for the day.

I get about 4-5 hours of sleep all week...the problem is I can't get myself to go to bed. My roommate can't fall asleep until 5 in the morning...I can't force myself to go tobed before 3. I found the best way, if you can't fall asleep is to get 4-5 hours one night..then don't nap the next day...the next night you'l lbe dead tired and passout. I dont' really have problems falling asleep...just gettin myself motivated to go to bed. Usually its cuase I'm too lazy to go brush my teeth and I dont' feel right goin to bed without brushin my teeth. I can't stay awake between classes or pay attention to anything. 4-5 hours of sleep all week and then on the weekends I seleep till 5 in the afternoon...usually get 11 hours.

Seriously: hydration plays a big role in your level of alertness, even slight dehydration can make you feel droopy. Try sipping water or something uncaffeinated during the day and see if that helps. Did the trick for me...I was almost passing out every day late afternoon prior to figuring this out.

Unseriously: Apply clothespin to penis to alleviate drowsiness. Add clothespins as needed.:Q
