How do you keep your data current across multiple systems?

Happy New Year to one and all.

Does anyone here have a painless way to keep data current, and updated, across multiple systems? I've found that between my laptop, desktop, work CPU, and 80GB portable drive, that sometimes data just isn't where I want it. My 'solution' is to try and only work off of the portable drive. But their are occassions when the drive is not near me and I just want that one file! I've made copies of folders I want on the systems, but then I worry about multiple versions.

Short of building a 2000 Server box for DFS, is their any PAINLESS program that would do an autosync of a folder or a whole drive?

There are many file syncing programs out there that would do the job. But if you are working in a 'disconnected' state, even w/ the program, it's kinda up to you to make sure your stuff is synchronized.

My situation is this: Fileserver, workstation, notebook, 60g portable drive. My document folder is stored on the workstation, backed up to the fileserver nightly. The same document folder is synchronized between the workstation and the notebook whenever I travel to and from my office (manual run). I also keep a software archive synchronized between the fileserver and the portable drive.

It takes a bit of discipline to sync the notebook, but it works for me. What would be nice is a solution that watched for connection to a lan and automatically synced the computers (ala active sync). There probably is one, but I haven't looked for it. 😉

One thing to note... you'll want to make sure that all of your system clocks match or you could get screwy results during syncronization.

Hmm,

'many file syncing programs' - Do you have one you particularly like?

The active sync think you alluded to is preciesly what I was looking for. Sounds like that is not possible. I could've sworn that arstechnica had an article a year or so ago that detailed how a USB drive could run an autoexec file upon plug-in. But it was so long ago it might not have even been on ars.

You think their would be something that would act like DFS sync'ing a folder on 3 workstations and a portable drive, and knowing which was changed and then updating properly.

p.s.
Good note, I could see MAJOR problems occuring if you have clocks screwed up
