How do you judge the sharpness of your monitor?

I have been using a Mitsubishi DP 900U but had to return it because it had some kind of power issue... The first monitor they sent to replace it was horribly unsharp... I would get headaches from looking at it longer than 15 minutes at a time. They just sent a second one that is noticeably better then the first monitor, but still doesn't seem as sharp as the original one. I am getting a little frustrated, and would like to know if there is an objective method of testing the sharpness. Thanks!

Hmm ... well, sometimes sharpness goes down as you increase the refresh rate (however this is usually a test of the vid card not the monitor). I guess just start reading/examining lots of black text at various font sizes on white backgrounds and see how fuzzy it looks. Ususally clarity in a monitor is very objective, but noticeable and annoying if it's bad. Another place to check for sharpness/clarity is around the corners of the monitor - some monitors get noticeably fuzzier and blurrier towards the edges (usually lower quality ones).
