How do you invent something?

I seem to have all these invention ideas pop into my mind while I'm on the brink of falling asleep each night and have often wondered how I'd even go about making them a reality.

Anyone ever done this or have any experience with do so?
 
1) create patent for some vague "invention"
2) wait for a company to make something similarly vague and make billions off it
3) sue, blackberry NTP style
4) profit
5) sue competitor, palm NTP style
6) profit
7) burn in hell
