How do you intellectually stimulate yourself after school?

So I'm a fairly active reader, both online and literary wise, and play chess regularly--but I still don't feel like I'm using my mind as much as I was when I was putting together math proofs and researching/writing back in school. I'm considering maybe taking up a programming language, like actionscript to get that mojo back into play, but anyone else have any suggestions?

I dont think when I was in school, I'd purposely go out and stimulate my brain... after school was over, I'd want to detach my brain as much as possible and go outside to play in my fort or whatever.

Want a challenge, learn assembly language.
I guarantee it will get you using your brain and your mouth, from all the cursing you will be doing.

x86 assembly is hell, 68x00 not so much, but then no one is on those anymore.

For fun?

I read and play poker. I write plenty at work, and as a sysadmin I problem-solve all day long. That's enough stimuli for me.

Generally, I'll join a pick-up game of Frisbee or something on the green if one's going on, but otherwise Reading/Logic Puzzles suffice.

Oh, and Homework.

oh man. In my sysarch class in school, one assignment was to compile a simple C++ program into object code, print out that code, and label which parts translated to which C++ statements. Then, we had to compile it w/ max optimization and do it again.

I first tried to do this on my desktop. Uh.....after 4 near-suicide attempts, I logged into the CS department's machines which used MIPs....yea.

Most of my intellectual advancement occurs through necessity at work. I have to figure new ways of doing things out or learn a new software. I like learning things on my own as opposed to having to sit through a class where I will get bored quickly. Working on my car can be stimulating. I like to tackle car maintenance that I've never done before but after reading about I know I can handle. Most of the time when I'm not at work I'm just trying to decompress and forget about it for a bit. That means hanging out with my girlfriend, playing video games, watching tv or my latest hobby model airplanes. Had three airplane kits in the closet that I've had for like 15 years. Decided to get back into the hobby and finish them. Now that I've got funds to throw at it I'm buying all the paints and learning how to make them look good.

I've struggled with the same problem. I think I'm going to start going through some of those self-teaching books. I'll probably start with astronomy and go on to things like physics and chemistry. I haven't studied any of those since high school, but I really enjoy the subjects. I'll probably try to read some in-depth history books as well.

never stop taking continuing education courses. my profession forces me to take them, but it's a good thing.
