i have partitioned my hd and formatted it and now i want to install win 2000. however, when i try and run setup.exe it says "this program cannot be run in DOS mode." so considering all i have is dos how do i install windows? thanks.

it keeps giving me the same "cannot be run in dos mode"

got it to work... i was typing winnt32.exe instead of winnt.exe

now it says it didn't detect smartdrive on my computer and that i should exit now...do i need smartdrive?

now it says that setup was unable to install windows boot loader. ensure that your c drive is formatted and not damaged. setup can't continue.

could this problem be caused by the fact that my c drive is on the ata 100 controller?

Either:

1. Set your bios to boot from the CD (easier)

2. Go to the d:\bootdisk\makeboot.exe and make your 4-floppy boot disk.

my bios is set to boot from the cd...but when i turn the system on i still choose start with cd-rom support and then it starts up but i can't run setup off the cd.

i don't know if the partition is marked as active.

god this sucks...it shouldn't take so long to install the darn os.

i don't have bootdisk on drive d

You do not need to put a floppy disk in you floppy drive. The CD should boot up and begin the installation program without having to type setup.

The bootdisk directory is on your Windows 2000 CD if you prefer that route. Of course you would change your bios to boot from a: in this instance.

yeah jsut setup in the bios to boot from your cd-rom...like after it searches the floppy nad before it boots from the hdd....a messege at post will say press enter to boot from the cd....thats it

i guess i might need to format the drive again because every time i turn the pc on it asks me whether i want to boot with cd suppor, without it, or minimal. it will not boot from the cd.

i reformatted the drive but i still get a microsoft win millennium startup menu (start with cd or without) when i boot. i had previously tried using a win boot disk but where is this information being stored>? this is killing me!

Go into your bios.make your cd drive the second boot drive in your boot sequence as in: 1.floppy 2.CD Rom 3. HDD. Your boot sequence is messing you up, and don't use a boot floppy disc.

W2k will install without smartdrv.exe, but file copying will take forever. Just find smartdrv.exe, copy it to your boot floppy if it's not already there, and run it from the A:\ prompt before you install w2k. If your drive's on an ATA100 controller, you've got to load the drivers (from a floppy) at the start of install - one of the screen messages is if you want to load a driver to press a function key (F6, as I recall) - - or you could install w2k on IDE33, install the ATA100 drivers in w2k - do it once for each ATA100 channel - and later move the drive to ATA100 (as long as the drive letter doesn't change you'll be OK).
