How do you install drivers of USB WiFi device in Ubuntu?

I was wondering how you get a USB WiFi device to work in Ubuntu? Is this some sort of command line thing? Ubuntu does not seem to know that the device has been plugged in or not. I downloaded Linux drivers for the device but I can't find any sort of executable to install the drivers.

which usb wi-fi is it? linksys can be a royal pain sometimes. I have a wusb600n and on some distos I couldn't get it to work.

The drivers should have a README or INSTALL file that explains what needs done.
