How do you increase microphone sensitivity?

For some reason, my microphone worked perfectly fine BEFORE I reformatted my harddrive. Now, people can barely hear! My microphone isn't picking up my voice as good anymore (I have to yell but people still can't hear me). I wanna increase the microphone sensitivity but I don't know how to do it. If the problem isn't the sensitivity, then what could it be? Ideas?

(I have onboard sound and I THINK I installed the latest drivers)

Control panel-Sounds and audio devices->advanced->options->properties->recording->make sure microphone is checked->ok-> make sure volume on this is turned up->advanced on microphone balance/volume->+20 dB boost

Hope that works.

What the heck? I'm at the Advanced Controls for Microphone place and I don't see anything about +20 dB boost or anything like that. Also, I can't change the bass and treble of my microphone for some reason.

1. Did you increase the volume...and I don't think you should be able to change the treble bass...I can't...

2. It doesn't look like this ? That might be an audigy 2 ZS option..what sound card do you have?

No actually, I just need to use the microphone boost. Now its loud as heck! But still good!

Alright, I'm gonna continue this thread with this question:

Whenever I turn on my computer, my microphone volume in the Volume Control is ALWAYS muted and the microphone boost is always turned off, so I have to turn both of them on every time I want to play a video game. Is there a way to permanently unmute the microphone and turn on the microphone boost so that I don't have to do it every time I turn on the computer?
