How do you help to save the planet?

Though I guess this subject has already been throughly discussed here, I feel its important enough to bring it to focus again.
Beside all the latest weather feaknesses, and the Al Gore campaign got me worried to the point where I actually try to be as green as possible, well, to the extent that it doesn't force me into major changes of lifestyle.
I saw this commercial with the livestock farting and then they say it ruins the ozone layer and that was really sick, but it made me think...
How are you helping out in the effort or why aren't you?

I recycle, and I don't litter.

That's about all I do. If I could afford a Lexus Hybrid, I suppose I would help out that way as well.

Way to keep it on the DL.

I don't particularly worry about recycling; but i do try to conserve and reuse. Recycling in several cases is wasteful and causes more problems for the environment.

In addition, I don't think the human species is capable of truely affecting the environment. I thinks its just quite arrogant for us to think that we are that important in the world. but thats just my opinion.

I help with that issue all I can - I eat the cows.

I ride my bike most places. This has numerous benefits:

1) Zero emissions, unless I had Taco Bell.

2) Keeps me fit.

3) Reduces the strain I put on health insurance companies because i am fit. Fat people cost three times as much as me, if not more.

4) Infinite miles per gallon.

5) Faster than a car in many cases.

I wouldn't worry about Al Gore. He obviously isn't worried about you and has a big carbon footprint. http://www.businessweek.com/in...2/gores_carbon_fo.html

I don't see being Green about saving the planet. It doesn't need saving. Weather is always unpredictable. Temperatures will always fluctuate. We have periods of drought. For me being Green is about not being wasteful, and saving myself money. This means not running the Air Conditioner at 65 degrees, recycling, buying fuel efficient cars etc.

[nitpick] unless you count the gallons used to fuel your body (i.e. the gallons used by tractors, etc... to harvest/deliver the food you eat) [/nitpick]

though obviously better than taking a car, especially if thats how you get your exercise.

I actually had a disclaimer to address that issue, but I deleted it. Food is a necessity whether driving, walking, biking, or skiing, so I feel that it shouldn't be factored in across the board.

You don't see mileage ratings with 26mpg minus 2 (miles)/(gallon x hour)

But depending on where your food came from, it could be impacting the environment alot more than others (in terms of chemicals used, gasoline used, etc...). If you grew your own food, on the other hand...

I don't. 99.999% of the crap that people do is just feel good BS anyway, and when the oil runs out, the market will take care of the problem.

Um... I don't use very much paper, and I yell at the kids to turn off the damn lights when they're not in a room.

Give me a break, I'm talking about biking. Infinite miles per gallon when compared to a car, neglecting manufacturing usage and maintenance. I'm not talking about my damn foods.

Regardless, I eat natural foods. No HFCS for me. I don't drive a Hummer, I bike. Get off my back.

I ensure that the gasoline I used is used to power cars that are fun to drive, and that I derive enjoyment and satisfaction out of its use rather than being miserly and "saving" gasoline by driving a soul-less econobox that I despise.

I also use compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

I drive a Ford Expedition 4X4. I figure the more gas I burn, the more of that nasty toxic oil they'll remove from the ground...making the Earth a healthier place...:p

I can't say that using CFL is green. CFLs contain mercury, which as I'm sure you know, is disastrous on the environment. When you throw a CFL away, it most likely ends up broken and in a landfill. That mercury accumulates and leeches into ground water, poisoning everything in its path. Until there are controlled CFL disposal methods, their benefits are questionable.

Less electricity or more mercury?

See, I've always said that, but now that greenies have driven down the costs, I have no intention of not saving money.

Funny how meddling with stuff rarely seems to work out, does it?

I listen to headphones instead of a full speaker setup.

I use a laptop instead of a desktop (and the last desktop I had is more like a laptop than a typical desktop). Since I really only use it to browse the web and other simple tasks I don't need a desktop level of power.

I'm waiting to buy another 360 until I can get the 65nm revision. I'll also likely wait to get a PS3 until they do a hardware revision there as well. When I do replace the current computer I plan on it being another laptop with more efficient tech (hopefully DDR3, SSD, LED backlit or OLED display, etc). Also, when I upgrade my TV (admittedly its a 30" CRT HDTV so not the most energy efficient) it will hopefully be to a much more efficient tech.

I have a fan so that we don't use the central air as much.

I walk to campus (of course I live pretty much right next to it anyways, so it was faster that way).

I don't drive excessively, and carpool with friends/family when possible.

I recycle and I'm in the process of switching over to LEDs. I'd buy a hybrid, but I'm a bit short on teh monies right now.

I'd also bike everywhere, but most of the time I either need more storage capacity then my bike's utility rack, or it would take me > 1 hour to get where I'm going.

However, I do bike everywhere at college (best mode of transportation in a lot of cases). I only use my car for longer trips.

I think the whole concept of helping save the planet is ludicrous. The planet will maintain itself just fine for many millions more years without our input. Humanity is what may be facing its doom.
