I honk my horn, flip off other drivers, etc. It's a really mature way to handle stress.

Really. :D

Traffic is the bane of my existance. I get so pissed off I don't even care if I used that word correctly.

I work 7 minutes from home (15 minutes after I close on my new house), but it's the weekend travel traffic that I can't stand. I guess I'm fortunate my daily commute isn't bad... if it were, I'd have no hair at 24 years of age.

I live in the traffic capital of the world, Los Angeles.

The secret is twofold:
1) Have a car bigger than everyone else's. I have a full size pickup and I abuse my size advantages. Luckily my commutes are in soccer-mom-free zones so there are very few huge SUVs to contend with. When I want to switch lanes, I signal and switch lanes. If some jackass doesn't want to let me in, tough, I'm bigger.

2) Surface streets are your friends. The freeway drive from USC campus to Los Feliz can be a half hour or more if you take the freeway. I can get there in 15 minutes by using little known side streets. Morning commute from downtown to West LA can be an hour on the 10 freeway. I take Olympic, saving me about 20-25 minutes.

You too? :D

The best is that sometimes the traffic on the main street trying to get onto the interstate backs up all the way past my apartment which is like 3 blocks off the main street, so sometimes it takes me like 8-10 min to get to work, so I come in like 5 minutes late and people are like "You live so close, how could you possibly be late?"
You should see the look on their face when I tell them "I got stuck in traffic!!!"

Back when I did have to commute for an hour, I had a 12-disc CD player in my car. I turned it up and sang along, and forced myself not to get pissed off at everything everyone did. If I was in slow traffic, I'd tell myself "more time I can relax in my car and listen to good music."
It worked out well.

It's funny you mention the soccer moms, because that is the exact mentality the soccer moms have. "My car is bigger, I'm invincible, I don't have to follow the rules."

Amnesiac 2.0 is a SOCCER MOM HA HA!

Heh. My grandfather (was a drill seargent in the USMC, and is still 6' and about 220lbs) was stopped at a red light and the light turned green. He took a little bit to get going instead of taking right off and this guy behind him started honking. Grandfather got out of his Jeep and walked back to the guys car and asked him if he wanted to be dragged out of his car and have his ass kicked. Guy stopped honking and shut up. Grandfather got back in and drove off :p

Unfortunately there really is only one good way to get from my apartment to my work (have to cross a river, etc.) But Kansas City is unique in that it's probably the only major city in the US wherein "rush hour" actually lasts about an hour. As opposed to most other large metropolitan areas where rush hours lasts all day long. My 18 mile commute each way takes about a half hour or just a little more, unless someone stalls or gets in an accident on the 6 mile stretch of 4-lane road with absolutely no shoulders.

I go to work at 10:00 AM - one and only way to beat the traffic.....back when I used to live in Northern VA, I often had 1.5 hr commute to cover 25 miles, most of it on the Capital Beltway. It can get really tiring, particularly in the evenings when you are staring the the tail-lights of the car in front of you. Thank God, I don't have to do that any more. Quite a few times I've found myself staring at a car that wasn't next to me the last time I looked...only to realize that I must've closed my eyelids for more than just a second :Q

I live intown (about 8 miles from work) and commute through neighborhoods and parks via bicycle. I finally got fed up with spending 80% of my time waiting for traffic to move and 20% actually driving so I put some slicks and a rack on my mountain bike and haven't driven to work since the beginning of this year. Turns out it's actually faster by bike most of the time anyway since all the little roads feeding into the Emory University/Hospital/CDC area stack up miserably when school is in session. It would occasionally take me almost an hour to get to work whereas now it's 30 minutes on the nose every day. Atlanta's traffic is terrible, so I made work and house decisions in part to get around this. Sure, I could have a huge house outside of the city somewhere, but two to three hours per day spent in traffic just isn't worth it to me.

Actually, they don't think they're invincible. They're too busy beating their children and screaming at their husbands on the phone to realize that they're drifting to the right and taking up 2 lanes.

I tried to commute during offpeak hours. Of course with an act of nature or stupidity it does not matter when I am on the road.

so true. 1) i take my x5 whenever i have to take a freeway, anywhere. and 2) growing up in la, my mom knew surface streets so well she can now get from cal state fullerton (her house) to ucla in about an hour anytime of day on surface streets. i only wish i knew them half as well.
