Asked similarly-minded enthusiasts on VWvortex.com- I am a Dunlop user for life. Their tires rock.

1986 Volkswagen GTI on 185/60/14 Dunlop SP Sport A2s.

Personally I favor Bridgestones, always had good experience with them. My mother's '98 Maxima has a set of Bridgestone Turanza LS-H tires that have been really good. The original Toyo Proxxes (sp?) were quite good as well. Getting the cheapest tires is almost never a good idea. Yes, they tend to last nearly forever because of a very hard tread compound, but that also translates into extremely poor traction, especially in the wet. I'll only buy Bridgestone, Firestone (truck tires only), or Dunlop. This is not to say that Goodyear or Michelin are not good brands, it's just that my preference lies elsewhere.

Whatever you do though, to NOT get an off-brand tire. The off brands are junk, I wouldn't put them on a tricycle. Avoid names like "Multi-Mile", "Grand Am", or "LeMans".

About the only tire that I think IS overpriced and sold greatly because of marketing is Goodyear. Them being the preferred OEM tire of almost any GM car doesn't help much either. People see they have Goodyear on the car, take it to a tire shop, tell the guy to replace them with the same thing, and get reamed probably 50% more than they should.

Treadwear rating.

My first set were BFGoodrich Comp T/As. Very nice. good, long wear. Full set was nearly $900.

My next set will probably be Yokohama's like those listed by Hammer. Good tread wear, a little cheaper.

My Probe came with Goodyear Eagles on it. They were bald in <2 years. My BFG's have been on there for 5+ years and probably still have a couple years to go.

Yeah, I won't touch anything by goodyear anymore. The two sets I've had have been noisy, gripped poorly (especially in the rain), and didn't last very long. Had much better luck with Yokahoma and Dunlop.

For those who think tires should be considered with price/mileage, don't you think treads should be factored in? I'm not talking about the difference between the treads of a standard tire and an aquatread, but tires like Pirelli Scorpions were designed to funnel water better than the standard tire. Depending on your location/weather, I think it's something that's worth extra cash.

Is this not a valid argument ?

Don't but into the marketing hype. My suggestion to you is the same. Take the list I posted above and see which of those tires you like the best. I have never gone wrong buying anything that was in the top 5 of something CR rated.

Bah.....my Dad put Scorpion AT's on his truck after buying into that hype and they were the worst tires he ever owned....took them off after 6 months. A guy I work with had some sort of Pirelli on his Vette when he bought it and he had them replaced.....for a good all around tire look here very good tires, and with a bonus of being made in the USA. I have had several sets of their tires on both perfomance/sports cars, and my SUV. Never had a problem and as long as they are around I will continue to purchase them.

My current vehicles include:
2000 Dodge Durango
1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Sport
1972 Oldsmobile 442
1987 Chevrolet Silverado

And they all have Cooper Tires on them.......

The Monte was a graduation present when I graduated from high school in 1988....still only has a little over 42,000 miles on it. The Olds is one my Dad and I restored........here's a full list of the cars I have owned.

One's I've owned personally:
1972 Oldsmobile 442 (Dad & I restored it)
1983 Pontiac Grand Prix
1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS (Dad & I restored it)
1987 Chevrolet Silverado
1988 Chevrolet Monte carlo SS
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS (Dad & I restored it)
1994 Chevrolet S10 Blazer Tahoe
2000 Dodge Durango (My current everyday car)

And all except the Pontiac and Blazer have had Cooper tires put on them when they needed new tires......Blazer had some sort of Goodyear and the Pontiac had Kelly tires on it.

Michelin no matter what. I
Michelin is overrated crap.....set that came on my Durango from the factory were supposed to be top of the line 60k mile tires.....just replaced them at 31k miles because they were worn all to hell, and yes I rotate and balance them every 5k miles. Second time that has happened to me with Michelin tires.......plus they are owned by the French.....nuff said right there.

Quick question...is it a good idea to get an alignment? I've noticed that my car is pulling slightly to the right, but this may be from different weight pressure in the tires. Also, how much do alignments usually cost. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Always get your front end aligned and your tires balanced if you start experiencing something like that. You should also balance and rotate your tires every 5k-8k miles.
