mouse?

Odd question, yes, but I have been looking for a new mouse, as I am finally getting fed up with wires and apparently wireless mice have progressed far enough that they no longer suck. The only problem, I can't find a single mouse that is comfortable for me to use. I was excited about the new Intellimouse Explorer wireless, but not only do I dislike the new wheel, but it's just damn uncomfortable. Same forthe Logitech MX700, and every other mouse in existence. (I can only remember two mice I've ever used being truly comfortable; a cheapy Logitech, and the original Intellimouse Explorer 1.0).

I think my problem is that when I have my hand on the mouse, I curl my ring and pinky fingers. Why? Because I pick up and move the mouse a lot, and that makes it easer it pick up when I can dig my ring finger into the side of it. Also, I don't actually move my hand when I move the mouse; I just move my thumb and ring finger while the heel of my hand remains stationary on the mousepad (This also might explain why that finger is always ingrown). Upon realizing that I do this, I have tried to improve my mousing technique and form, but it just feels so weird to have my ring and pinky fingers stretched next to the mouse. It feels slightly better if I rest my ring finger on the mouse as well, and just have my pinky off to the side, but then my fingers are not resting square on the buttons and my ring finger inadvertently right-clicks.

So, I implore thee, denizens of the net, mousers supreme, masters of all thing micing: what is the optimal technique for strain-free mousing? I have tried to correct my posture but to no avail. Please tell me how I can better myself!

i have an intellimouse explorer. i just rest my hand on the mouse basically, and move with my wrist. index finger rests on the scrolly and moves over to click. third finger sits on right click. fourth and pinky finger kind of rest on the edge of the mouse.

Dang hardware threads and their misleading titles... razzle frazzin fongin piece a rabble rousin furgin perkit bzzum fmmgbhf [trail off grumbling]

i wish they had mice for left handed people.

I also wish the ppl who designed lecture halls' seats with built in tables took into account left thanded ppl.

I'm in the same boat. None of the new mice really have a good feel.

If they'd just make a wireless version of the plain old wheel mouse optical I'd be a happy camper.

But instead you have to put up with funky curved things...others that require a paw the size of a grizzly bear to hold properly, or just have too many buttons tacked onto it for clumsy oafs like me to use without hitting them.

i actually like the mx500 and 700 mainly for the thumb groove. index left. middle scroll. ring on right. the lecture halls on my campus all have some left handed seats. i believe it should be mandatory, though you'll only see them on the left side

I use the simple intellimouse optical. I also curl my fingures as I like to lift it up sometimes but it seems to be very comfortable to me. Dunno though, just my experience

Get a keyboard tray and a chair with armrests. I just keep my arm on the armrest and so that my hand is naturally above the mouse. Then I just let my fingers drop down onto the mouse and move it with a little wrist action. Thumb on left, index and middle finger on top, ring finger and pinky on the right. All fingers are more or less straight.

Typing that out was so weird. 😕

I realized that I do that exactly. I move it with only my pinky and thumb and my pinky has curved itself from doing this so much. There is a wheel and two buttons, so my three middle fingers just work there. Sometimes it actually really begins to hurt and I have to stop using the computer. Ther most comfortable one I have used is the logitech mouseman with a normally ball, but maybe not so much for games. Mine has two rubber things to hook and i list up the sides, so it works out pretty well.

They do. Of course, they're freakin expensive. I'm sur eyou can find cheaper ones though. My mom's left handed.

Of course, most mice (like my personal favorite, the MS IntelliMouse Optical) are symmetrical, so you can use either hand. You know how to configure a mouse to be left-handed in Windows, right?

Anywho.

EDIT: Oh, a bazillion ppl already replied to your msg... oops. Didn't see any quotes, so I hit the reply button. Doh.

i grip my mouse with my thumb and ring finger, which probably didn't help the healing process of my hand (fractured the bones in my hand leading up to my ring finger and pinky multiple times). i wish i had a bigger mouse though, but if it was big enough where i would use my pinky, my ring finger would probably get in the way of the right-clicking

Thumb - left along the mouse, grabbing the mouse when the need of movement arises (horizontal position)
Trigger f. - left button
Middle f. - wheel
Ring f. - right button
Pinky f. - help the thumb in the task of moving the mouse. (this one's vertical)
Wrist - on the mousepad

My position: lying in a comfortable chair, my right arm is on the desk, even my elbow. I don't like to use computers frontally. Armrests would be useless, I couldn't use them, and I never get tired anyway. I type mostly with my left hand.

jeez, how can you guys have three fingers on the mouse? My hands must be fat or something, because there is no way my index, middle and ring fingers will all fit on the mouse comfortably...

My thumb is at the back-left corner.
My ring finger at the front-right corner.
The back-right corner of the mouse is held against the heel of my hand.

In this way I'm holding the entire mouse so I can easily reposition it quickly, but have my middle and index fingers conveniently available to work the buttons.

I do this with both my Intellimouse Explorer and my Intellimouse Optical.

I have an MX700 and grip it with my thumb and pinky finger. I have my index finger on left-button, middle finger on scroll wheel, and ring finger on right-button.

I can pick-up and move the mouse easily by gripping with my thumb and pinky.
