How do you go up a ladder in Mirror's Edge? (Seriously)

I have default settings enabled. I start going up a ladder for a couple motions and then it automatically just slides me down. In this case I'm trying to get up to a rail line and don't want to go back down the ladder.
 
I did have a controller connected. Then I disabled it because it didn't seem to work very well. Do you remember the fix?

I just tried to redo the tutorial and I can't even get over the vaulting over a low object which I don't remember being any sort of issue during my first pass through.
 
In case this ever pops up on google, the solution is to delete the saved game and config files. The bug is triggered by connecting a gamepad.
 
Been a little while since I played, and like Infohawk says it's probably a bug... but does holding down the Mount key help, maybe? Whatever key it is that lets you climb over small objects?
