How do you get yourself noticed by employers?

There are many places where I would like to get an internship this summer, but I am looking for a ways to get my resume past the front door. My resume is good as are my grades and other "pre-qualifiers". So many companies would prefer you just submit your resume and just hope yours gets received.

I went to my career fair, but some firms did not attend. Recently, I went to a tour given by a person from the company, and afterwards I talked with them, and now they are personally putting me in the perspective summer internship pile. I find that cold calling, although effective for learning insider company information, generally at larger firms, the one you talk to has little to no involvement in the applicant decision making process, and often refers you to their website to submit.

But other than this, what are techniques have you all used?

That's not cold calling, you're already a front runner. You already know someone on the inside. What in the HELL do you mean "the one you talk to has little to no involvement in the applicant decision making process," THEY ABSOLUTELY DO. In fact their job depends on it.

I find your approach very unusual and your thinking counter productive. The reason they refer you to submit via the web is because that's the formal process. E-mail his ass, with a copy of your resume/cover, tell him the opportunity seems like a good fit and ask if he could please forward it to those involved in the decision. I ASSUME you already submitted your resume via the web application.

DUDE! They're not going to hand you a job on a silver platter or beg you to work for them. You're selling. Now get to selling yourself. You're not begging, you're selling and you already have an in.

To answer your question, you are already in their house and well past the front door. If you sit there and stare at the floor they're going to kindly ask you to leave.

Pick the company you want to work for, then find out the name of the CEO. Set him up with an attractive call girl, a scenario he can't refuse. Videotape the affair and then blackmail him for a good position.

Thanks for input spidey, it is appreciated. I guess I wasn't very clear in my initial question. In the situation mentioned, I did send him my cover letter and resume, and have kept in contact with him. In that situation, I think I have my foot in the door. But this only happened because of the tour given to the school affiliated club I am a member of.

Unfortunately, for other companies I would like to get an internship at, they may not have come to my career fair, and they aren't giving any tours like this anytime soon. I was more curious as to what strategies I can use to possible do something similar, "know someone inside", and skip the formal process if possible.

I sleep with anyone in charges wife or g/f. I do a good job so they always put a good word in for me.

If I do get fired I just tell them I can't sleep with them any more.

Usually I am hired back at least 2 levels above where I was.

It's profit.
