How do you get tested for Mensa?

Seriously, though, I was wondering what the official process was for Mensa testing. I know several individuals here are current or were previously members of the society.

I have had my IQ tested several times, and I have scored around 130-ish (high 136).

Obviously, I assume the Mensa test is much harder than a "typical" IQ test. It would be interesting to see what my chances are getting into the 98th percentile. Depending on the rating/scoring used, I think Mensa requires a minimum score of approximately 132.

It would be cool to at least give it a shot...

You cruise down to their local chapter, pay a fee and they test you out. At least that's the way it was back in the day. They don't have offices per se, but there were get togethers in larger metropolitan areas.

How do I qualify for Mensa?

Membership in Mensa is open to persons who have attained a score within the upper two percent of the general population on an approved intelligence test that has been properly administered and supervised. There is no other qualification or disqualification for membership eligibility.

The term "IQ score" is widely used but poorly defined. There is a large number of tests with different scales. The result on one test of 132 can be the same as a score 148 on another test. Some intelligence tests don't use IQ scores at all. Mensa has set a percentile as cutoff to avoid this confusion. Candidates for membership in Mensa must achieve a score at or above the 98th percentile (a score that is greater than or equal to 98 percent of the general population taking the test) on a standard test of intelligence.

Generally, there are two ways to prove that you qualify for Mensa: either take the Mensa test, or submit a qualifying test score from another test. There is a large number of intelligence tests that are "approved". More information on whether a test you have taken is approved, as well as information on the procedure for taking the Mensa test, can be obtained from the nearest Mensa office. There are no on-line tests that can be used for admission to Mensa. Feel free to contact Mensa for specific details about eligibility.

Mensa has no other eligibility requirements other than IQ testing. However, many tests are not valid for people under the age of 16. You should contact the nearest Mensa office for more information.

I'm pretty sure you can get it tested from an independent licensed tester and they will accept it.

i tested and got in a couple years back... you gotta pay membership dues and stuff, so it's not worth it if you don't participate in any of the activities/get-togethers

Not to say that your statement about IQ tests is wrong, but Mensa members ARE smarter than your average joe ;0

If you think you are so smart, then why are you considering paying money to join a club of smart people? Shouldn't the satisfaction be enough? Mensa is for the top 2% of the population that is stupid enough to pay to join, so it is the bottom 99% of the top 2%.

Anyway, go show off your IQ score to hobos on the street if you need gratification, that is what I do.

There are a bunch of tests that can qualify I you. Back in middle school I scored high enough on the Otis-Lennon test to get in.

Too bad I'm dumb now.

Well, if you have to ask, you wouldn't....

Seriously, if you got on the top 2% or something in a standardized test, they'll accept it. You can also go to a mensa testing center.

Unless you're looking to go have drinks with other smart people and need new smart friends, you're basically paying them money so you can go around telling people how smart you are.
