How do you get pictures off a digital camera?

I pull card & plug into laptop's built-in reader or USB reader if I'm moving it to the desktop machine.

There is no right or wrong way. I pull out the flash and use a usb reader. Since I can fill up multiple CF cards by the time I get near my PC. The memory cards are designed to be reused.

I do laugh at my sister in law who says "let me know you pictures from last Christmas"... she then proceeds to whip out her camera and cycle through the images on the card.

Just use the cable and the camera.

My 2GB card has plenty of space for me at this stage

I have one of those floppy / USB 2.0 card reader drives for my main rig and use that.

Edit: I never ever directly connect the camera to the PC via USB.

I don't have a card reader at the moment, so I just hook up whatever camera I was using to transfer pictures. In the future, especially if I get a 2nd memory card, I'd probably get a card reader.

I pull the card. I have my own filing system and like to know where my photos are and where they are backed up.

Connect to PC using USB and then copy there with Canon software that detect and transfer automatically.
