It wasn't premeditated, he didn't mean to kill her (or at least he was able to convince the court), so basically it was a case of temporary insanity and assault, in the eyes of the law.

Unfortunately that probably won't be a problem. It's well known that there are a certain number of women who are actually turned on by this kind of thing and several mass murderers are well known to have had "groupies" of a sort.
