How do you get a web site listed on search engines?

I read/heard that all you have to do is have links to your site from other sites. If there's any truth to that it sure hasn't worked for me.

Does a site have to be 'submitted' to search engines for submission?

You'd have to dish up some cash. The more you pay, the closer to the first page your link will be.

google searches all pages based on a theory like this. The more pages that link to your page - the better rank your page gets. It also helps if your page is linked to by other sites with a high ranking.

on top of that, it also takes time. Google isnt able to search every single page ever constantly. Took my site several weeks before it showed up on google, and i never paid anyone.

Thanks for the links folks!!

RossMan, I nearly had a stroke when I saw that your site had more than 1000 times as many members as mine did!!

How did the content of domains about the tsunami, that were registered the day of the tsunami, get listed on google after just two days? They weren't sponsored links.

I've been trying for over two months with no luck.

Google won't list you unless you are linked to from another site that they have listed. Other search engines will find you the same way as Google or you can submit through the search engine site itself.

best thing to do is email the webmasters of every site you can find that has content similar to yours, and get them to link to your site (usually they will want you to return the favor)

It's best to stick to sites that are in some way related to yours. Dont try and get just anyone to link to you, a bunch of irrelevant links will eventually hurt your rankings.

Theres a lot of sites out there with oodles and oodles of information on how to tweak your site so it is indexed and ranked well among search engines. Look them up, read them.

So my sig at this site isn't enough?

I have also submitted directly to google and a few others.

if you want in google, submit your site to dmoz

pick your keywords and make sure your site has relavent content and usage of those keywords - don't abuse them or try to cheat the algorithm, google will ignore your site completely if you do so

a good way to get traffic AND link popularity is google adwords
pick your keywords/phrases and set a small budget $5 per day or so depending on what CPC will get you in the top 10 sponsors

after a week or two sites with adwords will have been indexed with your links on them (giving you link popularity)
you'll be indexed, if your link popularity and page rank are decent you'll earn natural placement towards the top of the search results.

if your domain has the keyword(s) present, you'll receive bonus points from google and likely outrank the sites without those keywords in their domain

Actually, it's better to do more than submitting to DMOZ. DMOZ can take months, years, or you may never get listed at all without ever knowing why, or if and when they may list you. I know because I used to be one of their category editors. In addition to submitting to DMOZ, get a link to your site from another site that you know is already listed in Google. This is the surest way that Google will find you and list you.

Find someone on this forum that you see has their site listed in Google and PM them and ask if they will link to you. I'm sure someone will help out.

Edit: BTW, the adwords method is probably a good way to do it (I've never used adwords but I'm assuming that works) but if you don't want to spend money just to get listed in Google, then adwords won't help.

I've also submitted to DMOZ.

Since this site (Anantech.com) is listed in google won't a sig link get my site spidered?

The thing is my site is listed on google only as its URL: www.besthealthboards.com but none of the content is found in a google search.

That mean's I haven't been spidered right?

that wont work, adwords is run through javascript, Google(or any search engine bot) won't index it.

Heh heh. I like this:
Health message boards with over 4 members using vBulletin!
You should start a thread asking all the ATOT members with websites to crosslink each other so we could communally get to the top of Google's search results

It's been spidered. I did a search using:

"Tell us Health Topics you would like added to BestHealthBoards.com"

and your site came up. Google does not necessarily index all content in forums; I don't know what it uses to determine what it will index and what it won't, or how deep it will spider when it comes to forums.

Edit: Also, improve your title. After your domain name in the title add a short description using mostly keywords. Keep the title description short, about 6 - 9 words total.

yes it will, i've had my site show up in results due to adwords already
i think it depends on the delivery method

Also, having a unique name helps. Google my name here, and you'll find a lot of references to my site. Mainly forums. However, 2 weeks ago, you'd find nothing. My site was down, and therefore was banished from google's rankings for a bit. I used a simple URL submitter that came with my last hosting plan, which used cpanel. But you can find many programs that claim to submit your site to various engines.
