I have a product that I would like to have developed. It is not world-changing. It's just magnets and plastic.

How do I get protypes made and then, hopefully, take the product into development?

Who here is an inventor?

I'm sure there you can buy some good books on the subject but for the quick and dirty

Assuming your product has a market, start with a patent search b/c somebody else might have made it already http://www.uspto.gov/

Next form your own company

Next narrow down the manufacturing process including factory, tooling cost, suppliers of raw materials etc.... so you can get a test batch made. While doing this contact possible suppliers, resellers, industry professionals etc.. and do the whole website, press release etc... to let people know about your invention

Once the first batch comes through you should start sending out samples with pricing, availability, company info.

Then make $$$

Depending on what you want to do and how much capital you have, there are companies that will do everything for you.

don't forget, you need investors. or loans. bonds, stocks, etc. in other words, capital.

Eff that...if you can afford your own capital, and are pretty sure of the returns on this product, then go ahead and do it yourself. Maybe, just maybe, if you need a investor, don't let them take more than 7.5% ;) (why 7.5%? Because it's between 5% and 10%).
