How do you get a *clean* XP SP2 installation...?

I know, I know, I should just re-install, but with all the themes, programs to re-install, stuff to backup in the case that it should go wrong, not to mention fully reformatting my primary OS partition (a given in any real clean install), I was wondering if there's any way I can avoid spending yet another late night (six+ hours, generally, including game/app re-installs)...

I have a relatively quick computer, overclocked mildly (i'll update the OC specs in the link in my sig), with no heat problems, I don't have many programs/processes running the background (31 processes after a restart, at most), I don't have any real-time virus scan running, and I have no spyware/viruses/etc resident on my system...

I still have no problem playing a resource intensive game, encoding video, listening to music in resource-intensive iTunes (yeah, yeah, I know 😛), and alt-tabbing back and forth to Firefox with umpteen-million tabs open, but things definitely are still considerably more sluggish than only maybe three months ago tops when I re-installed XP.

I have both AMD dual-core "optimization patches" installed, though i've never really noticed any difference b/w them.

Basically what i'm asking is for tips to clean things up in general and get everything back to the same snappy performance that you always seem to get for a month or so after a new install, no matter how many programs you install. Registry cleaners that actually work, more detailed programs to see just how many processes really are running (hidden, embedded, et al), and geek programs alike that I could benefit from.

Thanks for the help/advice in advance.

*edit* Can't update my overclock in my rig because of some unknown error on the page, so basically, it's an Opty 165 cooled by a Scythe Ninja, running @ 2.74Ghz (305Mhzx9), with quick DDR running @ 212Mhz and 2.5-3-3-6.

there's no way to restore windows like that as far as i know. but do this:

use nlite to create an up to date windows install, install all your programs, then use a program such as acronis to create an image when everything works great. then simply restore the image whenever windows gets slow.

Winnar 🙂

nLite + drive imaging software = fewer headaches with a system reinstall.

HyperOS, using for several years now...

I don't spend time and effort caring for my system,
just drag-and-drop one of my many systems
onto a freshly formatted partition (ca. every 6 months)
