How do you get a cat to not scratch up the furniture?

Yup, I've heard this solution suggested by many different people. And keep those claws trimmed. It will save your legs when its on your lap and gets scared and leaps off, too.

Couple of other ideas (untested)...

Put some pennies in a jar or can and shake it to scare the cat.
I believe they make cat nip spray. Add some to the scratching post to make it even more attractive (or hide some catnip inside).
They also make cat claw covers, provided you can get them on the cat in the first place.

you guys have never had cats...they scratch stuff out of instinct. My cat is declawed (*gasp) and he still scratches the couch.

Just do something so the cat associates no fun with scratching the couch. Water gun works for some. Others you have to swing them around till they're dizzy and then watch them walk...er, get them a scratching post.

Use a spray bottom on the cat any time it starts. Also get the scratching post things that are flat and can hang on a door knob and be screwed to the wall. We have 3 or 4 of them through our house. Only furniture cats scratch on is a woven type chair because it's similar to the scratching posts.
