how do you fly the dodo in GTA3?

I cant fly it for more then 10 seconds. People said they have flown it for 1 min. What am I doing wrong?!

while you take off, hold up half way (with the analog) and eventually it will take off on it's own, I can fly forever in a straight line, but maneuvering is a whole different story...
