How do you Fix Slow Bit Torrent Downloads on DSL ?? *PLEASE* :)

I know this is always re-hashed again and again but I have this problem and it is rather annoying. I use DSL here in Toronto, Canada. Bell Sympatico. I don't use a router I use an alcatel speed touch home dsl modem plugged right into the ethernet port. With a firewall with the bit torrent ports unblocked or with the firewall turned off altogether, it makes no difference. I get terrible download speeds. Oddly sometimes if I mess with torrents that are not availible to fully complete (ie. less than 100% is seen among all seeders and peers) once I get everything that is availible and am sitting at no download and some upload. If I than open up a torrent my download will usually open wide up to 100+ or whatever. Now this is not always the case. And if I just open one up it always has horrendous download speeds. Does anyone know a concrete reason/solution for why this goes on ? I know this is a unique problem to dsl users and bit torrent. I am hoping for some solutions. Thanks in advance.

Best way to increase Torrent DL speeds to make certain your ports are open. But since you don't have a router, I am uncertain how to open them. It maybe that your DSL provider blocks the ports on their end, leaving you SOL.

Having too many torrents open will also kill your speeds. Depending on what your DSL is rated at, I wouldn't have more than say 5 open at any given time. I usually have between 5 and 7 going, and my internet browsing slowed to a crawl. I capped my DL speed to allow some decent browsing speeds though.

I have DSL Telus Velocity and have no download/upload problems and I have a router. I know this doesnt help much. But I would check your bit torrent software. Do you have the latest version? What client are you using?
