I picked something I liked to do and busted my ass learning as much as I could about it. That's not to say that it's my only interest, just that it's what I'm good at.
Started messing with computers and assembling them, then started fixing them, then worked in a call center doing entry level support (with 2 years college, and some programming experience), then learned unix/sql, and went to a secon tier position, then went to a 3rd tier position, then came over to development, now ... moved over to support on the development team, and the subject matter expert of a handfull of our applications....
That said, I think If I would have studied film, directing art house cinema might have been my calling in an alternate universe.....
