How Do You Find Out About Property Crime?

I'm looking at moving into an apartment complex which is fairly nice, but which borders some not so nice areas. I'm particularly concerned about property crime (vandalism, cars being broken into, etc.). How do I go about finding out about this sort of thing?

Go to your county/city/district's police department website.

 

FBI's Uniform Crime Reports

It's the 2004 preliminary report (which shouldn't change much from the final 2004 version when it's released in October or November).

That's great if they have that information, but don't bother calling the police department for that information. Most local LEAs are so overworked and understaffed that they don't have time to gather, synthesize and sanitize that sort of information. But if they have it readymade, that's great.

Our city PD site has crime stats by districts. Unfortunately, it's for '03 and back.

It takes a LONG time to synthesize such data (especially for local PDs, as I posted above). The '04 data will probably be out in late '05.
