I was reading this article over at Usa Today.

This really iritates me about how a country which claims to be a majority of christian religious based people, can allow the minority of people to completely erase everything Christmas stands for, and replace it with a meaningless watereddown version of it former self.

I highly doubt that many modern day people know about, much less celebrate December 25 as THE FEAST OF SATURN, BIRTHDAY OF THE UNCONQUERED SUN.

Actually, I did read Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code but I've known about the origins of Christmas for a good 20 years+.

That's because Christians killed a whole bunch of people that believed in the other gods, then used the centralized roman state to BAN their worship. Which sucks, because hellenistic religions sound a lot more fun than Christianity.
 
Emperor Aurelian combined several pagan holidays (several devoted to the Winter Solstice) into one holiday on Dec. 25th. During this time, Mithraicism was the official religion in the Roman Empire. Later, it was Constantine (and don't believe that "I saw a sign!" crap, he was raised christian by his mother) that decided to make chrisitianity the official religion and assumed the 25th as a holiday in order to appeal to a broad range of pagans, hoping to convert them.


So a better question would be, how do you feel about the christianization of some holidays?

I've never really known them to be xtian days anyway. They've always just been holidays to me, no real religious significance for me. Was raised Catholic, too.
 
Raised Catholic, I like to see religious symbolisms simply because of tradition. People are too quick to give up tradition in favor of not offending anyone. Really, is it so bad to see a nativity scene? Does it really kill you?

But actually, I'm more offended by people who want to remove Christmas trees from public institutions. A Christmas tree is a SECULAR icon. They won't let us put up one here at work because one guy that works here is indian or some crap, and it *might* offend him. (They didn't even ask him if it would offend him) :roll:

Right, don't let facts or truth interfere with your agenda. If people are taking the christ out of christmas it's only because they're regressing it back to its original purpose.

Fall = Harvest
Winter = Hope we don't die

Sounds like a couple of good reasons to party.

More places should do it as the Supreme Court has laid out, simply being inclusive of many or all of the other religions. Put a christmas tree, hanukah candles, kwanzaa and all sort of other stuff up.
