If you haven't heard about them before, a randomizer will take a ROM/ISO/bin/cue/etc. file of your favorite game and jumble all the items and abilities found throughout the world. That being said, from what I've seen, almost all randomizers have "logic" for the items - meaning the game will never lock an item behind something that requires the item you're trying to get. For instance, in Super Metroid, the game will never lock your super missiles behind a door that requires a super missile to access. The logic also dictates where you're able to go depending on which items you find. Also, in some games, the randomizer requires the player to be able to perform some tricks (ie. bomb jumping in Super Metroid), and while not every game requires you to know some of these tricks, most of them can be pretty difficult if you don't find a suitable item/weapon early on.
Ever since Link to the Past and Super Metroid randomizers came out, more and more games are being randomized which is bringing new life back into some old classics. I've heard quite a few people across various forums speak out against modding the older games but to me it just felt like they were angry that someone found a way to change a childhood classic. There is even a Zelda: Link to the Past/Super Metroid combo randomizer which not only randomizes all the item placements throughout both games (you can find SM items in LttP and vice versa), but it also connects both games so you can play them at the same time. There's a few doors that are basically just transitions which move you between different games so you can run through the beginning of LttP for item checks and then move straight into Super Metroid. From what I read, they are able to thread both games together because one game only uses low RAM values for items whereas the other only uses high RAM values for items, so getting an item or ability in Super Metroid cannot overwrite an item or ability in LttP.
So far, the list of randomized games is fairly extensive and it's growing constantly. I've played a few already (Ocarina of Time, Symphony of the Night, and Guardian Legend) and they felt like the old games I loved, but with a very unique twist. SoTN is probably my favorite and I got stuck on OoT but there's different versions for some games. There's a complete list here: https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/ if you're interested in seeing what all you can play.
Personally, they've given me a reason to dust off my old laptop and start playing these games again. What's your opinion on them?
