How do you feel about it?

It is a matter of fact that:
1) R520 is delayed.
2) 7800 GTX does ~7800 3DMark05 for $599
3) 7800 GTX SLI does ~10-11K 3DMark05 for $1100

Assume by August ATI will delivery R520 that does 10k-12k 3DMark05 for $599. Let us say it does match a 7800 GTX SLI with a single card.

Now,

How do you feel about your GTX/GTX SLI buy?
What is the reaction of Nvidia at that time?

I don't think that it is feasible to O/C the GTX by 40% to attain competitve performance. For sure Nvidia has a card to play, however, at 110nm, it will cost them dearly.

Speculation?, maybe. However, it's wise to wait to see what the ATI has to offer.

What is the point of this thread? Honestly, why? You dont have a 7800GTX, and you definately dont have two. I dont either, But that said..I would probably feel better than you and I both right now if I had them.

Let me check my crystal ball to see if I can see what ATI has to offer.

Edit: Crystal ball says "ask again later"

Can you get me some winning Lotto numbers while you're at it? I'd use my own crystal ball but I've been temporarily struck blind by the new *floral* print furniture my wife just bought for our living room.

If ATI can pull off a card like that for $599, then NV will need to reduce prices on the 7800GTX and/or release a comparable card for a comparable price. The 7800GTX will obviously not compete at the same price.

Some people might feel bad for spending the money on a 7800GTX SLI, but I doubt there will be many who feel that way. First, anyone who buys a 7800GTX SLI isn't very budget minded. They are willing to pay an extreme price for the very best. Second, these types will probably just go out an buy an ATI 520 Xfire setup if the card is that much faster.

The big question is exactly how fast will the 520 be? Its rumored shader power is certainly something to be reckoned with, but what will the memory bandwidth be like? I could see the card being significantly faster than the 7800GTX (assuming the 520 specs are true) in some games, but @ high res aren't the cards limited significantly by memory bandwidth?

Unless ATI has done something fancy to improve memory performance (like the embedded memory on the XBOX 360), the only way for them to improve over NV in that respect is with faster DDR memory. And that is something NV will have equal access to.

So, I see the ATI card being faster than the 7800GTX, but I see NV biding their time and then releasing something close in performance at the same time. It may just be a higher clocked version of the 7800GTX with faster memory, and ATI might still be faster, but if NV is able to manufacture less expensive versions of their chips easily, then they still might have an advantage at price points the majority of us care about ($350 or less).

Also, IIRC, both NV and ATI use TSMC for chip production. Therefore, is seems reasonable that if ATI is going to 90nm production, NV must not be too far behind. Does anyone know for sure if the two are sharing facilities?

-D'oh!

the r520 is going to be much more powerful than the 7800...but nvidia may have won this generation because they were out first, WAY first.

You assume that within the next 2 monhts, ATI will have a card that beats 2x 7800GTX SLI for the same price as 1x 7800GTX? What makes you think this?

i hope a 7600 comes out to destroy a 6800 gt. then i have a reason to buy a new card!

Simply it's reasonable to assume that one can expect from R520 to be 1.5 X850PE.
