How do you explain the internet to someone that's never even used a computer in their life?

My grandparents are over, and they seem amazed that I can get all kinds of information from a dinky laptop.

I explained to my grandpa (my grandma isn't interested in this stuff) that's it's a bit like an encyclopedia that is not sorted, and you use a search engine to find what you need.

Also, while we're at it, how do you explain the wallpaper on your desktop? He noticed that my desktop and my brother's desktop were both very different, but he's asking for a purpose. Is it just purely asthetics?

How would you explain what the internet is, and how it is used?

Why not just use the definition of the word? The internet is an INTERconnected NETwork of computers.

People, businesses, and government agencies have specific computers which are allowed to communicate with other computers. Any computer on the internet can communicate with any other computer on the internet. People who use these computers can then comunicate with other people through this network.

That is all the internet is, and it should be understandable to most people.

I personally wouldn't try to confuse poor grandpa who now thinks there is a motor engine inside your computer box and wonders where the gas is added. The term "search engine" is definitely not going to help explain anything.

Wallpaper on a computer is just like wallpaper on a wall. It is only there for asthetics. And it wastes time and resources to have it.
