How do you enable native command queuing with the A8N (Nforce 4) and the new Diamondmax 10??? It is supposed to support it, but there is nothing in the bios about this!!

not sure, but I see I saw that you had another post about the hard drive not being recognized properly. It's best not to keep making new posts about similar things..you can ask about more than 1 problem in the same thread, makes it easeier for everyone else, and you don't have 5 different things to keep track of. Not sure about the NCQ. What are your full system specs, and what will you be using the computer for? You can also list the questions you may have asked in other posts here as well, so it will be easier to help you out.

Right after the POST screen it should initialize the SATA controller and say something as to how you can access the configuration for the controller. The option should be in there, not in the normal BIOS.

On my nForce2 board with a Si3112 I have to press F4.

Hmm, I see nothing about an SATA controller initilization. I have an Asus A8N-SLI motherboard with NFORCE4 which I read supports NCQ. The Diamondmax 10 is a new SATA drive with NCQ support as well. So I am at a loss. As well, when I boot up, the harddrive reads LBA ATA 133! That I still can't figure out. Any other suggestions? I did not think I would need drivers. I saw an article for an Intel board with NCQ and they had to turn on something called AHCI or something which nothing in my BIOS refers to. I am at a loss.

Well looking at this thread it appears there are some problems with the maxtor drives, and NCQ..also appears that NCQ gets turned on in windows rather than in the bios.

if you do enable ncq, it may lead to a small decrease in performance, unless you are running a system that needs to access several files at a time from this hdd.

best example is a file server - that would benefit.
most home systems will not

I was interested in the Seagate 160GB HD which has NCQ (I didn't even know what this was). Is anyone having trouble getting this hard drive to work with there Asus A8N SLI Duluxe Board or is it just the Maxtor Drive?

Cheers,

Kerry

I installed Windows on my Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB 8MB Cache. It's plugged into the SATA1 plug and in the BIOS it is shown correctly as a SATA drive.
I do not use RAID and the seperated NVRAID Bios. I only have one single drive. But maybe - who knows - even a single drive has to be presented to Windows as a RAID drive, so the correct drivers are used. Intel users do it like that. But how should I do that on my asus board? The NVRaid Bios wants me to select my Raid-Type Stripe/Mirror etc. I do not dare to test every possible RAID setup..

So at the moment the windows device manager is showing only IDE ATA/ATAPI-Controllers.
I installed the latest nvidia chipset drivers as well as the Forceware drivers.
I can't find anything which activates NCQ or something which tells me NCQ is working.

SiSoftSandra05 gives me 57MB/s.
A benchmark which actually shows the benefits of NCQ is the Winbench99 2.0.
My scores:
Business Disk WinMark99: 7580
High-End Disk Winmark99: 19500
And I think this is not very impressive.
(But I am using a small 60GB partition which is maybe decreasing the benefits of NCQ.)

My rig:
Asus A8N NON-Deluxe
still the 1001 Bios (The only final one existing. From november last year!)
Win XP Pro, SP2
Tagan TG480-U01
1GB Corsair Value Ram CL3 in Dual Mode
MSI 6600GT

Besides this performance issue some words about another problem, mayybe connected to it:
The last days I experienced freezes after booting the machine in the morning. Windows gets suddenly really slow. Problems disappear after one or two reboots. Someone wrote in another forum that he has the same problem and sees a connection to his SATA drive not "waking up".

Hope someone can give advice!
