my stupid apartment's vent hood doesnt go anywhere... it actually throws the air BACK into the apt..

A lot of places have those. It does have a filter in it that will help draw grease and things out of the air, so it's better than nothing.
But I'm with notfred. Cook food that doesn't stink. When I make a curry, I pretty much expect my house to smell like it for a week.
