How do you electrify a fence?

I was thinking of how the ranchers do it. Wooden stakes or metal stakes with insulators on the stakes around which the wire is wrapped.

Those fences are easily defeated by even semi-intelligent primates.

I'm talking about a 10-foot, cast iron fence. How would you electrify it with enough voltage to knock a man on his ass? Like a stun gun.

Hmm?

Nice user name! :D

I doubt that will work on a big, iron fence. Those chargers are meant to charge 100 feet of thin barbed wire, not much else.

Besides, I don't want an "Ouch, that hurt!" I want a "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzap! *unconscious for 30 minutes* type shock. "

I really want to know what you're doing. I'm intrigued...

also, I'm pretty sure that pissing on an electric fence won't do anything to you, unless you're only a couple inches away (or at least that's what Myth Busters taught me. heh.)

:( I don't hate everyone. Just most people. Let me know how that pissing on an electric fence works out for you.

Electric fences, bah.

I'd set up tripwires with flashbangs. More effective, more fun, and probably less frowned upon than setting up an electrified 10-foot iron fence. Or M18 Claymores for that matter ;)

Voltage doesn't kill, amperage kills. So what you need to do is figure out how much amperage the human body can withstand, then wire an [insert term] in between a power cord and your fence. Voltage and amperage are inversely related. Current traveling on electrical lines is high voltage, low amperage, then gets converted to low voltage, high amperage for your home appliances. You need whatever device that is.

Take thick gauge electric wire. Splice to the main wires coming into and out of your house. Drag out through a window and splice with fence?

What if you killed some feeble old man with a pacemaker?!

Buy a commercially available fense energizer. It costs more than a hack job, but if you use it according to the manual, your liability is substantially limited.

Sounds like you need a pole pig.

Be careful though, these are lethal especially around the pool!

If you're careless, this could be you getting the new look!

If you get off easy, you will sh!t your pants and will probably continue to do so for at least a week.

Cheers!

:Q I want one of those transformer/canister things...Can I get one that makes the big, orange spark? :D

it's not the amperage either... that might be what you heard in high school though.
It actually depends on a combination of voltage, current, and frequency. For example, the human body can survive about twice as much current DC as AC at the same voltage... Most electrocutions with household wiring are due to the heart getting knocked out of sync - this is mostly due to the 60 Hz characteristic of the AC commonly used in the US which coincidentally is close the the frequency of the electrical signals sent to the heart.

Anyway... Michael D.. any simple to build fence would be easily defeated. Simply ground the fence.. no more zap... or, since it's so big, get a running jump so you're not contacting the ground at the same time you're contacting the fence. Most intelligent primates could make it. (and probably at least half of the ATOT posters!) I just got a nice shock a couple of weeks ago from a cattle fence.. my shoes apparently are good insulators... I touched the wire, told my wife it wasn't hot, and unfortunately, lifted the wire for her to go under, while with my other hand, I grabbed the metal gate that was swinging toward her.. zzzzzzapppp.

You must remember that these transformers have no current limiting. A small 10kVA pig will have a 13,800V primary and 120/240V secondary. To avoid tripping the main breaker, what is (usually) done is a large load such as a 4500W w/h element (remember it will get hot and needs to be ballasted!) or a welder's buzz box is connected inline with the secondary. A 50A (min) 240VAC circuit is used.

This will give enough current at 13,800V to fry most mammals and stop their hearts instantly.

It is quite dangerous!

EDIT: Btw stun guns are a joke. They do nothing more than piss a pissed man off. Unless you make one designed to do more damage.

Cheers!
