Hey all,
My mom is trying to get rid of an old water bed...she wants to move out of her house & doesn't want to deal with it anymore.

Anyway what's the best way to drain one of these things? Any special tools needed?

If anyone here has done this before, please advise me!

thanks,
-Eric

you need teh waterbed - hose adapter and a hose

hoot hose to waterbed with adapter - get water flowing through hose (this is the somewhat hard part) much easier if it can run downhill obviously, once its going you just wait

Just stick a water hose in it, stick it out the window, slap something heavy on the bed, and suck on the hose. Once you get the water flowing it will keep flowing on its own but the lower you can get the end you are sucking on the better.

Anywhere that sells waterbeds will have a fill and drain kit for around $10 with hose or faucet adaptor and water conditioner to prevent mold when you fill it back up

yea those kits work great. the one i had had a siphon on it so it made it very easy to get a siphon going compared to sucking the end of the hose.

Great...I wasn't sure if the kits actually worked or if they were just gimmicky.

I'll go pick one up...hopefully with a siphon.

Next question:
From physics...could I fill the hose with water (like hook it up to a facuet) and once the hose is full, turn off the faucet?

Would the water pressure on the other end force the water to keep flowing & drain itself? (thus eliminating this need for "sucking" ;))

You try picking up a queen sized water bed filled with water...

Even the empty 'water bag' is quite heavy.

Walmart still sold them as of about a year ago. You may have to hunt as they will be mixed in with bed linen and such. The kits make it take about 90 minutes to drain mine (max) whereas by hose took about 2-3 hours of constant work.
