How do you do good annotations... for an essay?

Basically, I can't remember how it goes... is it supposed to be: (Author. Page #) or what?

EX:

This famous person went to this place and in 1944 saved the day by..... (Roger Smith. 19-21.)

Is that right?

I'm pretty sure basic MLA format is (First word of works cited entry[usually authors last name], pg#)
