i'm not saying that as a dis; american beers have always tasted watery.
There are so many good beers in this country I couldn't even imagine making a list. I'm not talking about Coors or Buttwasher of course. Try a Red Hook ESB, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Magic Hat Fat Angel, Pete's Wicked Winter Brew, Harpoon IPA, or an Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter. You can find these in most liquor stores I think.
EDIT: As for telling the difference between good and bad beer, well, first of all you have to like beer. After that, it's just a matter of personal taste. Bass is good stuff, but I'd take a Guinness over a Bass any day of the week. There are so many different styles of beer out there that you have to try them to know if you will like them. Then once you know what kinds of beer you like, you can try what different breweries offer of those styles. A great way to try different styles is to visit a microbrewery. They will often offer a "sampler" that lets you get a little taste of what's on tap at the moment. Since, beer is seasonal and they make small batches by necessity, the beers will always be changing. Just don't look for a Miller Lite at a place like this because you won't find it. Damn I think I need to do some homebrewing now...
A fine example of why costing alot and being imported are not true measures of "good" beer would be Grolsch or Red Stripe. There's nothing special about Red Stripe, it's Jamacian Budwieser and Grolsch is downright nasty. When I was in school at UD, you could get a 6pack of Yeungling Black and Tan for $4.50 and they were tall boys! Taste them all and you'll know for sure! Of course, if you are ever at a loss, order a Guinness.
