How do you determine how much your job skills are worth?

Now, I work in Recruiting so I have access to all the comp spreadsheets, etc. But that also means I know how arbitrary job titles are, and since my title was created just for me I know that the title and comp range may not corrospond to my skills or job duties.

So how do I find out what I'm actually worth on the open market? I just emailed a recruiter from Monster who was advertising a job just like mine, and if I'm lucky she'll be willing to tell me her comp range.

http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oessrcst.htm - pick your state then your genera area and from there you keep narrowing it down to your "positon"...you will then be given the 10%,25%,median,and above averages, which can then be configured based on your years of experience and education.

This is how my company detrermins pay rate, if your HR dept wants to they can actually get more up to date data (2004) to go off of. This data is absed off census data so probably the most accurate salary ranges than other things like salary.com, etc

one way is to try and get another job. if someone is willing to hire you for $X more than your current position, well , there you go

as you say, even if you have a "Standard" job title, that doesn't mean that what you really do isn't comparable to some other title at a different pay.

never hurts to check around and see what opportunities are available

it said i am overpaid, it is obviously mistaken

it said im underpaid...i like it 🙂

Payscale Your free summary analysis suggests that you are not compensated well enough for your current role.

🙁

I would just go on job websites and look at what other companies are paying for jobs that are in the same ballpark as what you are doing and use that as a basis for negotiations.

I know everyone feels that they are underpaid, but hey, you have the freedom to choose a different job if you feel you are worth more.

That site is a huge pain in the ass.

That's true! They list every damn city and you have to choose it from a list!

That being said, I am paid at the 28% percentile... hmmm. I am $13,000 lower than what I should be paid!

woohoo ... I'm in between tho 10% and 25%. Though I just switched from a support to a admin job the first of the month. I guess it's good to know what I should be worth with a couple of years of experience under my belt (though hopefully within a couple of years I'll be transferred to a programming type position. In the company I work for, they like people who know many aspects of the mainframe, the big servers, and the little servers. As well as people who love to play with the korn shell.
