How do you cure/prevent hunched back?

I have quite a pronounced hunched back if I'm not aware of my posture. If I do, I will have to consciously straighten my back and pull back my shoulders.

Anyone has a similar problem and has managed to remedy this?

Don't tell me to go see a doctor. I'll see one when I have the means to!

Try sleeping on the floor, seriously it will help with your back problems. I know someone who saved himself from surgery by doing this.

Not sure if this is your problem or not. Some people have shoulders that pull forward and give a hunched look. A lot of times that can happen when they overdevelop their chest/shoulders relative to their back. It can be improved by building up the muscles of the back, which helps pull the shoulders back into a better position. Look up some stretches also, especially the pecs. Also focusing on good posture when sitting is probably pretty important.

If it's quite a pronounced problem, maybe you need the doc...

You could get the kind of brace they give you when you break your collarbone. It's like a figure 8 that goes in front of each shoulder and then crosses behind your back. It's mean to keeo your shoulders back. SO if you got one and tightened it up, it might hold yoru shoulders back until you could train yourself to always do that.

Also do some reverse butterfly weight lift things to strengthen your back.

Are you now or were you ever over weight? I have noticed that men (and some women) who have a pronounced belly will tend to walk slightly hunched over in an attempt to hide the protruding belly.

I am not and was never overweight. In fact I have nice flat abs. I am thinking more of a bone structure problem :(

Build your upper body, mainly your chest.

Which will only add to the problem... Or if he actually wanted to fix it he could work on stregthening the muscles in his back. Rows, deadlifts (not sure if those would help posture), etc. Just a thought.

Someone already gave you the most likely answer. You overdeveloped some of your muscles relative to the rest of you body and they are pulling your shoulders forward. Do you do a lot of exercises like pushups and sit-ups?

-This is what I would have said. Muscle imbalance can cause many problems. If you do resistance training, you'd better learn about antagonist muscles and balancing them. Good posture is easier achieved through proper building of muscles.

I've had that problem throughout my childhood. In high school I was pretty tall, so if I practiced having a good posture, people will say that I am blocking their view of the board so I just remained hunched through the period. I started working out my back a lot and it has helped a lot.

FREDDY: Incidentally -- I don't mean to embarrass you in any way, but I'm a rather brilliant surgeon. Perhaps I can help you with that hump.

IGOR: What hump?

Hello, i went to a doctor and he said that only excercise helps. I did bench presses and teh like but mainly holding dumbells down at my side and shrugging my shoulder almost ear height 12 reps each set, worked an absolute treat

hmmm interesting. I always get out of my chair using my arms, so my arms and shoulders are toned as they should be. I sit in a chair all the time, so my back is weak is fuck. Maybe this is why I like sitting forward all the time.

Work on your traps and back. Do pull downs, rowing workout, and anything to develop your back muscles. Try to target lower back muscles too. Lastly, make a conscious effort to keep your shoulders back and straight when standing.

I do all the above and my posture is much better.
