How do you count sheep in order to fall asleep?

As you can see by the time of this post I'm having trouble getting to sleep. Does counting sheep actually work? How do you do it? Do you picture a huge field of sheep and start counting from the top or bottom? Do you picture a long line of sheep and count them as they jump over a fence or something? Or dunk them one at a time into the sheep dip? Do you just have them pop into your head? Or jump one at a time off a tall building?

Lack of sleep is making me nuts. Please help?

Let pretty horses come to you as you sleep, I'm gonna go to sleep.

If you want to try counting sheep, then use whatever imagery comes easiest to you. You should probably determine what's causing your lack of sleep too though.

For the first time in my life I am able to fall asleep within 10 minutes of laying down. It used to take an hour or more for me to fall asleep.

My guess is that the counting is more to give you something to focus on, rather than whatever else might be keeping you awake - kind of a meditative state.

I find it calming to imagine a galaxy with as many stars as I can, and then set it all in motion.

What sometime works for me is start couting (not sheep) and as soon as you realize you tought about something besides counting, you start over at 1. What this does is focus your mind since it is normally other stuff you're thinking about preventing you from falling alseep.

I usually fall asleep thinking about what it would be like to be telekinetic, or be able to pause time.

I start at 999 and count backwards by three's (ie. 999, 996, 993, 990, 987 etc.).
Usually knocks me out by the 7 or 6 hundreds.

It's a form of meditation, its goal is to empty your mind of all the other crap you're thinking about so you can relax, focus and sleep. Focusing on your breathing works just as well.

real men don't count sheep. They count nubile, naked bimbos with big hooters jumping gracefully over our beds while they land crotch first on our faces.

I've tried counting sheep. It doesn't work for me. I've been able to count up to 1000 without getting any sleepier.
