edit 2: i am shocked at the amount of stupidity that has been spewed in this thread, so lets clear a few things up.
1) credit cards are free. using one does not make whatever you bought more expensive.
2) getting a rewards card is amazing. i get free gas every month simply because i buy it with a credit card.
3) debit cards do NOT count as credit.
4) yes, you can establish credit without owning a credit card, but why? you can get one for free, you dont have to put as big of a downpayment on a car (just an example) and you still qualify for the same interest rate.
5) if you pay off the previous months balance, you wont pay a penny in interest as long as you own the card, and this can be setup to happen automatically!
6) emergencies - what if you need 2 grand to fix your car, but you dont get paid until next friday? gonna borrow it for 300-400%? or gonna ask mommy and daddy? or, here is a super idea...fix it and put it on the credit card so you can pay it off at your next statement when you have the money in your account! plus, if you have a rewards card, you just got a lot of points/miles/whatever for money you HAD to spend!
/edit 2
i was out to eat with a girl from class yesterday and i got out my credit card to pay. she told me i need to cut that up and get rid of the account.
needless to say, i laughed my head off. i couldnt believe it. i explained to her the several advantages of having a credit card, but she just didnt believe me. i was shocked at this point. she was actually denying facts, and it was obvious that she was overheating from trying to implement logic into her thought process (as from another thread, girls + logic = ???).
some background on me...
took a year off to work at an engineering firm in dallas after high school, made decent money and saved every penny i could. tried to get a credit card a time or two, got denied. tried one last time, thought i got denied (i was only applying for $500 limit), but then the guy at my branch said "oh wait! you have been pre-approved for $5500 and a rewards card of your choice". FYI - i took it, got the cash back card, and i only spend what i would normally have spent on my debit card. i pay it off in full every month and havent paid a penny in interest over the last year. it seems obvious to me that everyone should do it that way if possible, but i realize many people out there have no self control and dont understand the whole idea...
after going through all of that with her, she still was so adamantly opposed to getting a credit card. granted, i really dont care if she is this stupid, but for the sake of arguement i wanted to try to explain to her why it can be a good thing.
so what can you say to someone who is completely ignorant to credit cards in less than 8-9 sentences (while you still have their attention) that can help them realize it actually can be a good thing?
cliffs:
1. semi-intelligent girl sucks at life
2. doesnt understand facts vs. opinions
3. thinks credit cards are from satan himself
4. she is semi-hot (not in story, and no pics, sorry)
5. the end
edit: you idiots that are anti-CC and have no clue about them need not respond. anyone with half a brain realizes good credit history can never, ever hurt you. oh, and i know this posts sounds like i was mean to her, but i was actually very nice and calm about the whole thing. i was genuinely trying to help her understand how it could benefit her to have one.
