How do you convert LCD screen size from CRT screen size?

I keep hearing that a 17" LCD screen is actually bigger than it sounds -- in fact, "it's more like a 19" CRT". Can someone take the "more like" qualifier out of the equation and explain the way to quantify one screen size to the next?

Specifically, I'd like to know how a 19" LCD would compare to a CRT (of some size)???

lcd screen sizes are the actual viewable and CRT sizes are for the whole thing with the bezel. Generally for crts you take what its rated as and subtract 1 inch to get the viewable screen size.

so a 19inch LCD would compare to a 20 inch CRT.

An LCD screen is just as big as it sounds. A 17" LCD has a viewable screen of 17".

On CRT monitors however they measure the size of the cathode ray tube which produces the screen, not the actual viewable screen.
A 17" CRT has a tube with the size 17", but the actual viewable screen size which the tube delivers is usually ~1" smaller (my 17" CRT is for instance 15.94" viewable).

Large size CRT monitors may be even more deceiving, some 22" CRT monitors actually have only a 20" viewable screen size and some 21" CRTs have 19" viewable screens.

So, to answer your question, up to 20" the difference in comparable screen sizes is virtually always ~1" less for LCDs. For larger screens it's also mostly ~1" but in sometimes ~2".

In addition to the 1" extra "viewable image size" the "more like +2 inches" you've heard comes from the LCD pixels being a bit sharper / easier to read than CRT pixels. So a 15" LCD is technically one inch smaller than a 17" CRT (with v.i.s of 16") but generally accepted as being just as easy to read at the same resolution.

My 19" CRT is 18" visible, and one of my 17" CRTs is 15.5", the other is 15.75"

With LCD's, what it says is what you get, so a 15" screen is 15" visible etc :)
